Religion

Holy Trinity, Bledlow Holy Trinity, Bledlow, stands in a beautiful spring line village at the foot of the Chilterns. One of England’s 1,000 best churches and a Grade I listed building, this Romanesque church dates mainly from the 12th and 13th centuries, and is largely unaltered.

  • the tower has eight bells;
  • the south porch contains Buckinghamshire’s oldest doors;
  • the nave has six massive pillars of 1200, each with different foliage patterns at the top;
  • the Norman font is in the Aylesbury style; and
  • fragments of medieval paintings and 16th century texts are on the walls.
St. Paul’s, Bledlow Ridge
St. Mary and St. Nicholas in Saunderton Originally, Saunderton had two manors and two churches. However, St Nicholas’ fell into decay and was demolished in 1452, while the remaining church, St Mary’s, dating back to 1227, became known as St Mary & St Nicholas.
It is a Grade II* listed building, built on the site of a Roman villa. In 1886 the outer walls began to lean inwards, so most of the building was demolished and rebuilt using, wherever possible, the original materials. As a result much remains of the old structure and fittings.
